In-Service Programmes

Department of In-service Programmes is in charge of Continuous Teacher Professional Development (CTPD) from entry point through service including licensing as pre-qualification for teaching in Basic and Secondary Schools in the State. Its flagship interventions covers induction of new teachers, continuous professional development of serving teachers, mentoring entry and serving teachers for higher productivity and professionalism and licensing teachers to practice in the State. The key functions of the department are:

  1. To periodically conduct Training Needs Assessment (capacity gaps determination) of Basic and Secondary School teachers in Niger State for the purpose of designing and implementing professional development interventions that will meet those needs and enhance the functionality, competence and productivity of teachers;
  2. To liaise and work with Basic and Secondary Education Agencies in the State to design and implement induction training for newly recruited teachers to enable them quickly and seamlessly integrate into the school system with a view to deliver their best performance without personal difficulties and system encumbrances;
  3. To develop and implement annual Continuous Teacher Professional Development programme on improving the capacity and competences of teachers in the areas of subject (domain) content, curriculum, general pedagogy, teaching of core subjects (English, Basic Mathematics and Science), classroom management, learning assessment, improvisation of instructional materials, instructional leadership etc.;
  4. To collaborate with international donor partners and other credible stakeholders working in the education sector to share Teacher Professional Development experiences and work out arrangements for sustainable linkages and the adoption or adaption of tested training materials for use in its training of Basic and Secondary Education teachers;
  5. To design and implement a system of mentoring that will institutionalize the process of translating transmitted knowledge, skills and professional disposition acquired during CTPD sessions into the practice in the real world of teaching and learning. The Mentors will serve the needs of both pre-service (pre-NCE, NCE and Undergraduates) and in-service teachers;
  6. To work with the leadership of the schools to create a vibrant community of professional practice in the Basic and Secondary Education subsector in Niger State. It will work to achieve this noble through continuous training of school leadership in the art and science of instructional leadership, school level collaboration and mutually beneficial knowledge and experience sharing;
  7. To liaise and work with national and international regulatory bodies to design, implement and review credentialing programmes for the purpose of licensing teachers to operate as professional in the Basic and Secondary Education subsector of Niger State. The Institute would leverage on the collaborations to continuously improve and strengthen its personnel’s competences and institutional capacity to succeed in this endeavor; and
  8. To seek out opportunities for teacher exchange, study visits and other related programmes with other Basic and Secondary Education agencies in other countries including those in Africa as knowledge and practice sharing strategy and a means of connecting to the global community of professional teachers in action for benefits of our teachers in the State.

    To address the challenges of teacher preparation through the running of pre-NCE teacher programme and effective engagement with Pre-service Teacher Training Institutions particularly College of Education, Minna and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
